The Nigerian Library Association came into existence in 1962 as an offshoot of the West African Library Association (WALA) which was the umbrella body of librarians in the then British colonies in west Africa. The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) is a professional organization dedicated to the promotion and development of libraries, librarianship, and information science in Nigeria. Its mission is to:
